How to Create a Banner Ad

Banner ads are a simple and effective way to promote your business on the web. This will cover how to make an ad in Photoshop using the common dimensions of 468×60. Just start with different dimensions for any other size.

Open Photoshop. Select File/New from the top menu bar.

In the dialog box that pops up, set Width to 468 pixels and Height to 60 pixels. Select 72 dpi (300 dpi is used for printing).

On the bottom left area of the screen, you will find a black box overlapping a white box. Double click on the foremost box. Select a color and click ok. That color will now appear in the foremost box. Select the Paint Bucket tool from the toolbar and click somewhere on your canvas. This will fill the canvas with the color you chose. (or select Shift + Backspace)

If you have a logo, open it in Photoshop (use .psd, .tiff instead of .jpg or .gif whenever possible) and drag it into the 468×60 canvas you already started.  Resize it using Ctrl + t and grabbing a corner, holding down the shift key so it will resize proportionately.

Add some text (selecting the text tool will automatically create another layer). Style the text anyway you like it (color, font, size, etc).

Animated banners cannot be created in Photoshop.

To place an image on another website, use the following code:

<a href=http://www.domainname.com target=”_blank”>
<img src=http://www.domainname.com/images/imagename.jpg
alt=”something descriptive” /></a>

Post on Page Other Than Home

  1. Create a page
  2. Under Page Attributes, select blog in the template drop down
  3. Save
  4. If using Genesis, select Theme Settings > select categories under Blog Page > Save Settings

Forum Software Review

9278_wpm_lowres.jpgI spent two weekends exploring software to add a forum to WordPress for a client! I looked at three different ones: bbPress, phpBB, and Simple:Press.

Everything I read indicated that bbPress was by far the best program, so I tackled it first. I got it installed and actually integrated it without a lot of problems. I had found a couple of tutorials on it and even a video. I created a tab that  linked to the forum and I created a mutual log in. But how to get back to WordPress? Lots and lots of searching, pouring through bbPress’ forum with unresolved posts, and I still didn’t have an answer, other than learning that I needed to get into the code and attempt to make the header look the same in both programs. But I found conflicting instructions on how to do that. I came away feeling that the support was next to nil and that perhaps it wasn’t even compatible with WordPress 3.1! Very frustrating.

So I moved onto phpBB. I like the look of their forum, it was easily installed via GoDaddy, but again there was the issue of making it look like the blog. I found a very good video on it, but it requires getting into the code and being able to troubleshoot when running into problems (even the presenter had issues). I didn’t spend a lot of time on it.

I took the advice of someone I’d just taken a WordPress class from. She recommended Simple:Press. What a breeze in comparison! They have an awesome tutorial and it integrates seamlessly with WordPress. It even creates the Forum tab! Whatever theme you pick for WordPress, the forum fits right into it!

I am sold on Simple:Press and won’t waste my time looking at any others.

Upgrade From Internet Explorer 6

Cartoon of man at the computerI was a long time Internet Explorer 6 hold out. I was comfortable. I liked some of the features. And I tend to have an “if-it’s-not-broke-don’t-fix-it” attitude. But when IE8 came out and I was exposed to an increasing number of “bugs” with IE6, I decided to take the plunge.

So why should you move away from IE6? First, it has security issues. Newer browsers have much better protection. Second, it lacks support for modern web standards. Consequently, web developers spend a great deal of time getting their web designs to work properly with IE6.

Internet Explorer 6 is outdated – it was released in 2001. It is what shipped with Windows XP. We have since seen Vista, which shipped with IE7, and now Windows 7, which ships with IE8. As new computers are purchased, there will be a natural transition to IE8 (and IE9 just released). But how long with that take?

It is recommended to get a new computer every 3-5 years because technology is advancing so much. But I know people who have had their computers for 10 years! I personally have noticed that after 3+ years my computer gets sluggish. New software is larger and more sophisticated and requires more RAM. And I download a lot off the internet in my search for products and education.

According to Browser Market Share News, IE6 usage is 10.97% (presumably worldwide). That’s significant enough to take into consideration when developing a web site, except that the United States’ usage is closer to 2.9%, which raises the question of whether your audience is inside or outside the United States.

If you have an older operating system, you may not be able to upgrade, and it can be expensive to do so in a large company. But as fewer people have IE6, fewer web developers will take the time to make their sites compatible with IE6, and they will look odd in those browsers. If you can upgrade, I would recommend doing so. If you cannot do so at this time, the next time you buy a computer, you will most likely get the latest version.

Choosing WordPress

http://www.freestockphotos.biz/stockphoto/349The difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org can be very confusing. Let’s take a brief look at them.

WordPress.com is free and easy to set up. You do not have to download software, pay for hosting, or manage a web server. Your address will be “somename.wordpress.com” or you can map it so it reads “somename.com” for a small fee.

On the plus side, WordPress.com provides web hosting, unlimited database storage, automatic software upgrades, community support forums, and more for free.

On the negative side, WordPress.com will not allow you to fully customize your site. You cannot upload plugins, you cannot run a custom theme, and you cannot place advertisements on your blog. What you get is a free blog, which may be exactly what you are looking for.

WordPress.org must be installed on your own server, e.g. GoDaddy, 1&1,  Lunarpages, etc or a third party provider. Though it does require more expertise, you have more control and more options. You can install themes and plugins, run advertisements, edit the database and even modify the PHP source code.

The software can be downloaded for free, but again it must be hosted on a web server before it will work. Web servers are usually not free. They run about $60 per year.

If you already have a web server, and a web site, you can install it on your web server and view it as www.umpquawebdesign.com/blog, for example.

If, on the other hand, you want a different domain name, you will need to purchase the domain name and purchase the hosting – unless your current host allows for more than one domain name.

If your needs are few, WordPress.com may be the way to go. If your needs are more complex, WordPress.org may be a better choice.

Think of WordPress.com like an apartment rental and WordPress.org like owning a home. The landlord takes care of the maintenance of the building and grounds. When you own your own home, you are responsible for maintaining the building and grounds yourself.

Efficiency in the Office

Keep pens and pencils handyDo you find yourself looking for something that was “on your desk just a minute ago”? Do you find yourself repeating the same steps several times a day? Do you feel overwhelmed by your workload? It may just mean you need to get organized.

Whether you work at home or at a traditional office, these tips can help you get a handle on your papers, your work load, and consequently your stress level.

Only handle paper once
Decide what to do with that paper or piece of mail that comes across your desk. Does it need to be filed? Does it need to be sent on to someone else? If it’s a project you need to work on, determine if it needs to be done immediately, sometime today, or perhaps tomorrow or next week.

I like to use what I’ve heard called a tickler file. It’s an accordian folder that you can purchase at your local office supplies store, or you can make your own. There’s a “folder” for every day of the month and folders for each month of the year. If today is March 10 and the project needs to be worked on or reviewed tomorrow, put it in the folder marked “11.” If it doesn’t need to be dealt with for two months, put it in the May folder. Then every day when you come to work, check “today’s” folder.

Use an “in” box for new items
Train co-workers and bosses to put items in your in-box and be sure to look at it “today.” Follow the rules for paper handling in the previous section.

Keep frequently used items within reach
Stapler, paperclips, pens and pencils, scissors, etc should be handy. They can either be on your desk or in a drawer, depending on how frequently they are used and how much room is on your desk.

Keep frequently used file folders in a drawer nearby or in a standup file holder on your desk. This way you don’t need to spend valuable time searching or walking across the room to get it.

Group activities
If you are going to make deliveries, decide what can be taken care of in the same trip. It could be you need to return something, pick up something, check something and they are all along the same path. So rather than making separate trips,  you will save time by grouping them together.

Make a checklist
If you have routine tasks every day, make a permanent list and check them off as you complete them. That way you won’t forget to do something.

If you have tasks that vary from day to day, make a temporary list, and of course check them off as you complete them. You will get a visual of all the things you have accomplished.

Evaluate
At the beginning of each day, review what needs to be accomplished “today.” Pull items out of your tickler file, check your inbox, and check email.

At the end of the day, review your lists, start a new list with items you didn’t complete today, review what needs to be done tomorrow, review upcoming deadlines, and place these things in your tickler file for “tomorrow.”

Your desk should be clear of clutter, ready for the next day.

Web Expenses – Web Hosting

web addressWhat is web hosting and why do I need to concern myself with it? The second part of the question has a simple answer: if you want your web site to be found by others, it must be hosted somewhere.

Web hosts are companies that have computers, called servers, that are connected to the internet 24/7.  These servers are assigned IP addresses so that other computers connected to the internet can find them.

An IP address is a four-part string of numbers. It’s easier for humans to remember a name than to remember a series of numbers. For example, what’s easier to remember, google.com or 209.237.80.42?

Choosing a host
The first thing to decide is whether to pay for hosting or to get a free site. If it is for a personal site that you just want to share with family and friends, a free site may be right for you. The main disadvantage to free hosts, however,  is that they have pop up ads. This can be very annoying and doesn’t look professional.

Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) oftentimes offers free space. This is usually limited space with limited services. But it may be a perfect solution to your needs.

A third option, and one that most businesses prefer, is to rent space from a hosting provider. Commercial web hosts offer multiple email accounts, much more space than a free host or one from your ISP, and many other features too numerous to mention in this article.

All web designers have preferences for web hosting. But they can help you make an educated decision about which host to choose. Use their knowledge and experience when choosing a web host.

What about cost?
Web hosting generally runs in the neighborhood of $10/month, paid annually. Oftentimes this is less when purchased in larger increments. So purchasing five years at a time is less than purchasing only one year, and ten years is cheaper yet. And I have seen free domains offered when purchasing a hosting plan.

If this seems overwhelming, don’t let it be. A little bit of research, or consulting with a web designer can help in your selection. Contact us, we’d be happen to help.

Web Expenses – Domain Names

Costs involved in having an online presence include the development of the website itself, purchasing a domain name, and web hosting.

It can be confusing at first to understand the difference between domain names and web hosting, and why both are needed, so let’s look at these in detail. We already addessed the web site itself in  How Much Does a Website Cost?. Let’s look now at domain names.

What is a Domain Name?
Domain names represent a unique address, such as www.umpquawebdesign.com. I like to think of a domain name as being like the address on your house. There is only one house with that number on that street in that town. The mailman has to have that unique address to find your home. The domain name is similar; it tells the servers where to find your website.

Suffixes
Domain names have suffixes and we’re seeing more variety as time goes on. The most common is .com, but there are others: .net, .org, .gov, .biz, etc. Since most people automatically assume all websites end in .com, your first choice would logically be .com.

Choosing a Domain Name
Choose a domain name that best describes your business or product. It appears that search engines prefer domains with keywords in them, so brainstorm 5-6 keywords and try different combinations of those words.

In addition, you will want to make your domain name unique, easy to spell, easy to remember, and avoid long names – people won’t want to do a lot of typing. I would also recommend not trying to be cutesy by misspelling a word or using 4 instead of for, for instance. It may be clever, but it’s hard for people to remember. If they can remember your name, they’re more likely to come back to your site over and over again.

Before settling on a name, find out if the name has been taken. There are several places to check this. Some examples are: register.com, namecheap.com, pcnames.com,  and hosting companies, such as godaddy.com and networksolutions.com.

Registering a Domain Name
Your domain name can be registered at the same place that hosts your site, but it doesn’t have to be. The hosting company may offer a free or reduced price on the domain name if you purchase hosting with them, so you will want to check your options.

Cost of a Domain Name
Domain names are fairly inexpensive, somewhere in the neighborhood of $10-$15 per year. Some registrars charge more than others, some suffixes are more expensive than others, and some registrars, as already mentioned, offer free domain names with a plan.

How Much Does a Website Cost?

How much does it cost? One of the first questions people ask when considering hiring a web designer to create a website for them is how much will it cost? I wish there was a simple answer to that seemingly simple question. A vague answer can come across as dishonesty.

There are so many variables when developing a website. An informational site is mostly text and doesn’t take a great deal of time. But a site with a shopping cart or a photo gallery takes considerably longer and requires more expertise. Since every site has different requirements, it’s understandable that a flat rate cannot be given for every website.

Web designers have different ways to charge for their services. Some designers charge by the hour, some by the project, and some per page.

Hourly rates vary tremendously depending on location, experience, and abilities of the designer. If an hourly rate is quoted, it’s important to find out how many hours the project will take.

If a project price is quoted, it’s important to make sure all the requirements of the website are listed and in writing before the project begins.

Per page rates are usually for static sites that do not require a lot of custom features. Designers with less experience tend to charge a per page rate.

If you are considering hiring Umpqua Web Design to develop a website for you, please understand that we want to give you the most accurate quote we can. To do that, we need to know what your site requires.

The Importance of a Business Website

The most important reason to have a website is to connect with people beyond your physical location.

Brick and mortar businesses are limited by the distance people are willing to travel. But an online business is open to the world.

Brick and mortar businesses are also limited by the hours it is open. An online business is open 24/7. Customers can shop or read while the physical business is closed.

As technology advances, potential customers or clients are turning increasingly to the internet to find what they need. They are more likely to go to the internet than they are to go to the phone book. Come to think of it, as more people are replacing their land lines with cell phones, do they even have a phone book in their possession?

Locally, a web presence is important because potential customers or clients can go to your website to find your hours of operation, your phone number, and your address.

A website is an essential tool for marketing your business because you can inform, educate, or sell products and services locally, nationally, and  globally. You can stay in touch with your customers or clients in so many more ways than you can without a website. Newsletters, surveys, blogs, and emails are all ways to maintain customer relations.

Today’s shopper (whether for products or services) assumes you have a website and they are searching for what you have. Your competition most likely has a website already and if you don’t have a web presence, they are very likely to get some of your business.

A web presence is important for answering questions people commonly have, for imparting knowledge and creating credibility.

Having a website for your business is essential. Why not contact Umpqua Web Design today and get started today?
